Shop Handmade!

The holiday season is fast approaching and although I'm a long ways away from any shopping mall, I am pretty sure the Christmas carols are blasting out the speakers and every shiny glass window is decorated with red and green, and signs telling you to bust out your credit cards so their corporate CEOs can have nice fat Christmas bonuses.

Now I'm not trying to be a total downer and tell people not to celebrate Christmas, if that's what you want to do (or any other winter holiday, of course). However, I do propose that if you decide to use this time of year to buy gifts for others (or yourself) that you do so consciously. I urge you to shop handmade, buying from artists, crafters, creators, and free thinkers rather than random big box stores and corporations who use teams of researchers, PR people, and marketing specialists to convince you that your life will be better if you buy, buy, BUY their products.

Hands-down my favourite place to shop is Etsy, an online global marketplace where any person is welcome to host their own online shop. On Etsy you can find anything, and I really mean ANYTHING. You can shop from thousands of different places all over the world, get items custom made, and find whatever you need, as well as loads of stuff you never even knew existed.

The best part of Etsy is that when you shop, you are buying directly from the people who make the items themselves. I get to have conversations with the creators, ask questions, build rapport, and even make friendships. So, so much better than spending my hard earned coin on corporations who don't give a shit about me, or their employees.

I thought I'd share a few of my current Etsy favourites so you can see how much awesomeness is available online, from fabulous people. I'm always awed and inspired by how talented and creative people are, in so many different ways.
